NLC Urges Tinubu To Withdraw Tax Reform Bills, Prioritise Citizens’ Welfare In 2025

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to withdraw the controversial Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly, advocating for a more inclusive process that reflects the input of all key national stakeholders.

In its New Year message titled ‘In 2025, Hope is in Our Collective Resolve,’ the NLC stressed the need for policies that focus on citizen welfare and address the rising cost of living.

A Call for Dialogue and Transparency
NLC President Joe Ajaero described the bills as divisive, especially in northern regions, where they are seen as detrimental to economic growth. He urged the government to collaborate with stakeholders to develop a tax framework that fosters transparency, acceptance, and national development.

“Our nation’s progress lies in unity and shared commitment. We call on the government to engage in meaningful social dialogue and withdraw the current tax bills to allow for broader participation,” Ajaero said.

Focus on Worker Welfare
The NLC highlighted critical areas that need immediate attention, including access to food, healthcare, housing, education, transportation, and security. It emphasized the importance of compliance with the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act and pledged to push for an upward wage review to mitigate economic challenges faced by workers.

Industrial Peace and Social Dialogue
Warning against the use of force in dealings with unions, the NLC stressed that such actions threaten industrial harmony. Instead, it called for mutual respect and dialogue to maintain peace in the labour sector.

The statement read:
“As we step into 2025, we extend warm greetings to every worker and citizen. The challenges we face must inspire, not deter us, as we collectively drive Nigeria out of underdevelopment and toward sustainable growth.”

National Dialogue in Ibadan
The NLC announced plans to host a national dialogue in Ibadan this January, aimed at co-creating a tax framework that enjoys broader support. The union reiterated its commitment to fostering collaboration and advocating for a prosperous Nigeria.

A New Year’s Resolution for Unity
As 2025 begins, the NLC has reaffirmed its dedication to championing workers’ rights and ensuring governance aligns with the needs of citizens. It urged Nigerians to remain united in the pursuit of progress, emphasizing that only through collective effort can the nation overcome its challenges and achieve sustainable development.
