The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has relieved Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu and members of his technical team of their duties with immediate effect.
The federation announced the decision in a statement shared on its official X account on Monday.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the NFF said.
Madugu’s dismissal comes after the Super Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa on August 14 in the continental playoff for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The result ended Nigeria’s long-standing record of appearing at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.
The Falcons had earlier suffered disappointment at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they were eliminated by Cameroon in the quarter-finals. The defeat forced Nigeria to rely on the lengthy playoff route for a chance to qualify for the 2027 World Cup.

Madugu had faced growing criticism during the tournament, particularly over his team selections and tactical decisions.
His departure comes less than a year after he guided the Falcons to their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
The 62-year-old coach had taken charge of the national team amid high expectations, but the failure to qualify for the next World Cup has now brought his tenure to an end.
