Nigerian social media figure and cancer patient Mensah Omolola, popularly known as AuntieEsther on X, has passed away.

Her death was confirmed on Saturday by media personality #AUNTYMUSE_, who had supported her throughout her treatment journey.

Reacting to news of her passing, X user Tabuko, tweeting as swaggsphotos, wrote, “Unfortunately, we lost Aunty Esther. Very Sad!” #AUNTYMUSE_ responded, “May her soul rest in peace 🙏🙏.”

AuntieEsther gained national attention after publicly refusing a blood transfusion recommended by doctors as part of her cancer treatment, citing her faith as a Jehovah’s Witness. The decision sparked widespread debate and drew support from Nigerians who donated over ₦30 million to assist her medical care. The fundraising was largely coordinated by charity advocate Wisdom Obi-Dickson, known on X as #Wizarab10, who confirmed that ₦30.7 million had been raised as of December 1, 2025.

In a previous update on her X account, AuntieEsther revealed that medical tests showed the cancer was localized to her breast and armpit areas. She explained that while doctors recommended chemotherapy, they first advised improving her blood levels.

“My organs inside fine. Doc say she want to start chemotherapy but I go take injection,” she wrote, adding that she and her family had opted for treatment methods to boost her blood count without a transfusion. She also thanked Nigerians for their support, saying, “I appreciate everybody. Thank you #Wizarab10 and #the_beardsina. God bless.”

The situation became more contentious when Obi-Dickson disclosed that AuntieEsther’s church had warned of potential disciplinary action, including disfellowship, if she accepted a transfusion. He said the doctors offered two options: a transfusion-supported treatment within the donated funds or a longer, more expensive approach that avoided transfusion. AuntieEsther chose the latter, adhering to her religious beliefs.

“Though it will take longer and cost more, we have to respect her religious beliefs,” Obi-Dickson stated. He later noted his frustration that, despite repeated medical advice, AuntieEsther, her family, and church leaders remained steadfast in refusing transfusion, emphasizing that they bore responsibility for the outcome.

Meanwhile, #AUNTYMUSE_ highlighted that AuntieEsther’s refusal had been clear from the start, even before fundraising efforts began, and that doctors had confirmed the non-transfusion treatment was a viable option.

The case sparked intense online debate, with many Nigerians questioning whether the donated funds should have been redirected to patients willing to follow life-saving medical advice.
