The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a serving National Youth Service Corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, during a security operation following an armed robbery incident in Abuja.
Jamiu was killed in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate in Dei-Dei, located in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, Lt. Olawuyi Odunola, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday.
He explained that troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group, who were on routine night patrol, responded to a distress call over an armed robbery attack in the area.
“Upon arrival, the troops came under gunfire from the fleeing armed robbers, resulting in a brief but intense exchange.
“In the course of the engagement, Mr Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he sadly succumbed to his injuries. This heartbreaking loss has cast a deep shadow over all personnel of the Guards Brigade,” he said.
Odunola noted that the situation was initially tense as troops engaged the suspects and worked to restore order in the area.
He added that senior officers of the Guards Brigade had extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the National Youth Service Corps, and others affected by the tragedy.

According to him, an investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, with assurances that findings will be made public.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital after being handed over to the appropriate authorities.
Odunola also reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to protecting lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory, adding that operational procedures would be reviewed to prevent similar incidents.
He urged residents to remain calm and continue to support security agencies in maintaining peace and safety.
