A Labour Party chieftain, Abayomi Arabambi, has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged failure of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to provide details of Peter Obi’s academic records.

Arabambi, in the suit, is seeking access to records relating to Obi’s Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, which the university reportedly awarded in 1984.

According to the court documents, Arabambi requested a Certified True Copy of Obi’s certificate bearing number D000198, alongside the academic records and other official documents connected to the degree.

The request was made under the Freedom of Information Act, 2011, but Arabambi alleged that the university failed to release the documents.

The originating motion, filed on September 9 by his lawyer, Anderson Asemota, was instituted against the Vice-Chancellor of UNN and the university, who were listed as the first and second respondents respectively.

Arabambi, a former factional spokesperson of the Labour Party, said he had previously written to the institution regarding the information.

He is asking the court to issue an order of mandamus compelling the respondents to carry out their statutory responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act by considering and responding to his request dated July 16.

In the court documents made available on Saturday, Arabambi stated that the request was received by the university on August 6, 2026.

“The applicant also requested a Certified True Copy of the certificate, academic record or other official records upon which the said degree was predicated.

“The said request was duly delivered to and received by the respondents on 6th August, 2026.

“The applicant expressly made the request pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, 2011, and stated the public-interest and accountability basis for the request.

“The respondents failed and/or neglected to provide the requested information within the period prescribed by the Act,” he said.

Arabambi further alleged that the university did not send him a formal written notification explaining its refusal to provide the requested records.

According to him, any refusal should have identified the particular provision of the Freedom of Information Act relied upon by the respondents in denying him access to the documents.

The suit is therefore seeking judicial intervention to compel the university and its Vice-Chancellor to respond to the request in accordance with the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.
