The Lagos State House of Assembly remains embroiled in controversy following the N5 billion purchase of vehicles for lawmakers, further straining the rift between Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and former Speaker Mojisola Meranda.
Sources indicate that during Obasa’s removal as Speaker, Meranda facilitated the purchase of 39 vehicles, despite Obasa’s prior N7 billion approval for the same purpose in December 2024. The situation has escalated, with Obasa challenging the legality of the purchase, insisting that he had planned to procure the vehicles from Dubai through his preferred bidder.
While Meranda’s camp argues that she only reviewed an existing approval and saved the Assembly N2 billion, Obasa and his supporters contend that she lacked the authority to execute the purchase.
Beyond the procurement dispute, Obasa’s legal battle against his removal remains ongoing, despite his re-election as Speaker. His lawyer, Fashanu Afolabi (SAN), stated that the allegations of financial misconduct and highhandedness must be addressed in court.
The case is set for hearing on March 17, 2025, as tensions continue within the House.
