Early Life and Military Career
Born on January 10, 1949, in Benin City, Edo State, Abbe embarked on his military journey in 1967, enlisting as a private.
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in July 1968 and rose through the ranks, achieving the position of colonel by 1986.
His military education included training at the United States Army Infantry School in Fort Benning, Georgia, the Ghana Armed Forces Staff College, and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, Nigeria.
General Godwin Osagie Abbe, also earned a postgraduate diploma in International Relations from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
Governorship and Ministerial Roles
General Godwin Osagie Abbe served as the Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State from July 31, 1988, to September 5, 1990, and subsequently as the Military Governor of Rivers State from August 1990 to January 1992.
Following his military governorships, he held significant positions within the Nigerian Army, including General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2nd Division, Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), and Commander at the National War College.
He retired from active military service in 1999 with the rank of Major General.
Transitioning to politics, Abbe joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999 and served as the party’s chairman in Edo State.
He was appointed Minister of Interior on July 26, 2007, and later became the Minister of Defence on July 14, 2009, during President Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration.
In these roles, he was instrumental in initiating and implementing the amnesty program for militants in the Niger Delta, aiming to restore peace and boost oil production in the region.
