The Airport Police Command in Lagos has confirmed that the fire outbreak at Old Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) has been successfully put out, with normal airport activities and flight operations now fully restored.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Adeola, the police said the incident, which occurred on Monday, February 23, 2026, had been effectively contained through coordinated emergency response efforts.
The blaze had earlier caused significant disruption, forcing flight delays, stranding passengers, and prompting the diversion of some international flights after control tower operations were affected. Thick smoke had also engulfed parts of the terminal as firefighters worked for hours to bring the situation under control.
Giving an update, the command announced that stability was achieved later that same day.
“The Airport Police Command, Ikeja, Lagos, is pleased to update the public on the successful containment of the fire outbreak at the Old Terminal 1 building of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA),” the statement read.
Adeola explained that the fire, which broke out in a section of the old terminal, “was fully brought under control and extinguished through the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies.”
He added, “By late hours on the same day, the situation had been stabilised.”
The command also confirmed that 12 workers trapped in affected sections, including areas close to the control tower, were safely rescued.
“Twelve workers who were trapped in the affected areas, including sections near the control tower, were safely evacuated. All evacuees received prompt medical attention, and no casualties or fatalities were recorded,” the statement said.
