The Federal Government has confirmed that the United States military, working in coordination with Nigerian authorities, carried out air operations targeting Islamic State (IS) terrorists in parts of north-western Nigeria.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi.

The ministry said the operation followed close collaboration between both countries and resulted in what it described as “precision hits on terrorist targets in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West.”

According to the statement, the action forms part of ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and its international partners, particularly the United States, aimed at confronting terrorism and violent extremism.

“In line with established international practice and bilateral understandings, this cooperation includes the exchange of intelligence, strategic coordination, and other forms of support consistent with international law, mutual respect for sovereignty, and shared commitments to regional and global security,” the statement said.

The Federal Government stressed that acts of terrorism in the country, regardless of whether victims are Muslims or Christians, remain a serious violation of Nigeria’s core values and a threat to both national and global peace.

“Nigeria reiterates that all counter-terrorism efforts are guided by the primacy of protecting civilian lives, safeguarding national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity,” the ministry stated.

It added that the government will continue to collaborate with international partners through established diplomatic and security frameworks to weaken terrorist networks, cut off their funding and logistics, and prevent cross-border threats, while also strengthening Nigeria’s domestic security and intelligence capacity.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to engage relevant partners and keep the public informed through appropriate official channels,” the statement concluded.
