There was unrest in several motor parks across Osogbo on Sunday following the reported killing of Kazeem Oyewole, a former part-time unit chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), by unidentified assailants.

Eyewitnesses said friends of the deceased, who served as chairman of the Aregbe Unit between 2018 and 2022, went around major motor parks in search of those allegedly responsible for his death.

While details of how Oyewole was killed remain unclear, a resident who witnessed the incident from a distance said hoodlums had previously set up a base at Elelede Junction, collecting money from passersby under the pretext of raising funds for a proposed carnival.

“While that was going on, a motorcycle carrying two people arrived the scene and those hoodlums forced the two passengers to disembark. They started fighting those passengers. I heard gunshots. They later identified one of the two persons that were attacked as Kazeem.

“Later, they brought big stones and smashed the head of a man identified as Kazeem. He died on the spot. The other person, however, escaped from the scene of the attack with open wound. After the incident, the hoodlums fled before police would arrive the scene,” the resident said.

A shop owner at Elelede Junction, identified simply as Basira, said some businesses in the area closed temporarily when the crisis erupted.

“The person that was killed was identified as Kazeem Oyewole by some NURTW people that came after the incident. He was said to be former part-time chairman of NURTW unit along Osogbo/Gbongan road in Aregbe Area,” she said.

Observations on Sunday evening at Old Garage and Aregbe motor parks showed that many people avoided staying near the parks due to fear of further violence, while hoodlums were reportedly still present in the vicinity.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer of Osun Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said, “We are aware of the incident that happened at Orita Elelede (Osogbo), and we deployed our men to the place immediately information got to us, but unfortunately, one person was confirmed dead. He was identified as Kazeem. Other name unknown. Investigation has commenced.”

On whether the command was monitoring motor parks to prevent escalation, Ojelabi added, “We are still monitoring the situation. We are going to monitor the parks for now.”

The incident comes less than two weeks after another NURTW leader, Adeboye Ademoroti, was shot dead by unknown assailants in Ilesa on November 27, 2025. Security sources told PUNCH that Ademoroti and another individual were shot at Olomilagbala area of Ilesa, although the exact circumstances surrounding his death were unclear at the time.
