A yet-to-be-identified man has died after his car somersaulted several times while he was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol along the Iponri Bridge in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State.
According to a Sunday statement by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, the fatal accident happened around 11:45 p.m. on Saturday.
Taofiq said members of the agency’s 24-hour patrol team rushed to the scene immediately after the crash and recovered the lifeless body of the lone driver.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the Navy Blue Toyota Camry, with registration number EKY 311 GK, was travelling at an excessively high velocity inward Iponri when the driver lost control of the vehicle near the Alaka Under Bridge in Surulere. The vehicle somersaulted repeatedly, culminating in a fatal impact that claimed the driver’s life at the scene,” the statement read.

He added that eyewitness accounts and forensic evidence confirmed that the driver was intoxicated, which severely affected his judgment and reaction time, leading to the deadly crash.
“Members of the LASTMA 24-hour Night Duty Patrol Team, who were actively monitoring vehicular movement within the Surulere corridor at midnight, arrived expeditiously at the crash site, secured and cordoned off the affected area to prevent secondary incidents, and immediately alerted officers from the Bode Thomas Police Division,” Taofiq added.
He noted that the deceased’s body was later released to his family by the police after proper documentation.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his condolences to the victim’s family and warned motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
Bakare-Oki, who spoke through Taofiq, described the incident as “a tragic yet sobering reminder of the fatal consequences of intoxicated driving.”
He urged drivers to be more vigilant, responsible, and safety-conscious, particularly during the Ember Months — a period known for increased traffic and road crashes.
“Mr. Bakare-Oki further reiterated that one of the central resolutions of the recently concluded ‘LASTMA Ember Months Stakeholders’ Forum’ was the intensified crusade against drunk driving, a societal menace that continues to exert a heavy toll on human lives within and beyond Lagos State,” Taofiq concluded.
Road accidents caused by speeding and drunk driving remain a major concern in Lagos.
Data from LASTMA shows that at least 87 people have died in 1,006 road crashes recorded across the state between January and September 2025, while 666 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Both LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps have continued to warn that the Ember Months often witness higher road fatalities due to reckless speeding, intoxication, and unsafe night driving practices.
