The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, along with other officers, over the killing of a suspect in Efunrun, Delta State.
The decision followed recommendations by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which found that the officers violated established rules on the use of firearms.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Force Public Relations Officer Anthony Placid said the committee concluded that the officer acted in breach of Force Order 237 and other operational guidelines.
“Consequently, the FDC has recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General of Police has approved the recommendations and forwarded same to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process,” the statement read.
The development comes after a viral video surfaced online showing the moment the suspect, identified as Mene Ogidi, was shot while already restrained. In the footage, the victim was seen seated on the ground with his hands tied behind his back.
The incident sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians demanding accountability and justice.

Earlier, Delta State Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed that the officer had been arrested and transferred to Abuja for disciplinary action.
According to the police authorities, the officers involved will be handed over to appropriate judicial bodies for prosecution after administrative procedures are completed.
Reaffirming the force’s stance, the police warned against abuse of power and unlawful killings.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” the statement added.
The police chief also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that the case would be handled with seriousness to ensure justice is served and public trust maintained.
