All five occupants of the Titanic submersible, which had been reported missing for days, supposedly perished when the craft exploded due to a catastrophic loss of pressure.
The Coast Guard announced on Thursday that the tragic news was true. Rear Admiral John Mauger of the Coast Guard reported that a part of the Titan had been found on the ocean floor about 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic.
According to Paul Hankins, US Navy Director of Salvage Operations and Ocean Engineering, there were five distinct large pieces of wreckage from the submersible, known as the “Titan,” that were discovered in the region. Each end of the pressure hull was also discovered in a different location.
The debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel, and that part of the ocean floor is an exceedingly harsh place. We quickly informed the family after making our decision.
The commander of the First Coast Guard District, Mauger, told reporters, “I can only imagine what this has been like for them and I hope that this discovery provides some consolation during this difficult time.”
The deep-sea submersible’s operator, OceanGate Expeditions, released a statement mourning the loss of the five guys on board just before the press conference.
According to reports, those who want to visit the wreckage shell out up to $250,000 each person.
