Sporting Lisbon has parted ways with coach Joao Pereira just over a month after he replaced Ruben Amorim, appointing Rui Borges as his successor on Thursday.
Pereira of Sporting Lisbon stepped into the role following Amorim’s departure to manage Manchester United.
However, a dismal run of form, including losing his first four Premier League and Champions League matches, has cost him his position.
Sporting Lisbon, who had a perfect Primeira Liga record before Pereira’s arrival, slipped from top spot after a goalless draw with Gil Vicente last weekend, with rivals Benfica taking the lead in the league standings.
Rui Borges, 43, takes over after a successful stint with Vitoria Guimaraes, where he guided the team to sixth place in the Portuguese league and a second-place finish in the league phase of the UEFA Conference League.
Borges now faces the task of reigniting Sporting’s season and regaining their footing in both domestic and European competitions.
