Kayode Adeniyi, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, has been arraigned before a Sagamu Magistrate Court.

Adeniyi, 47, was charged with manslaughter, reckless driving and related offences, according to information obtained by The Nation. The fatal crash occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had earlier attributed the accident to overspeeding and dangerous overtaking, which allegedly caused the vehicle to ram into a stationary truck on the highway.

Confirming the court proceedings, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said in a statement on Friday that the matter has been adjourned to January 20, 2026.

“Update: The Ogun State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode (male), aged 46, was charged to the Sagamu Magistrate Court today, 2nd January, 2026 and the case has been adjourned to 20th January, 2026,” Babaseyi stated.

Reports further revealed that Adeniyi, a long-time member of Anthony Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, had only been discharged from a Lagos hospital late on New Year’s Eve before being transported to Abeokuta, Ogun State, where the crash took place.

According to preliminary findings, the driver was allegedly travelling well above the 65mph speed limit on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when a tyre reportedly burst while he attempted to overtake another vehicle near Danco. The Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, subsequently collided with an illegally parked truck loaded with soya beans.

At the time of the accident, the vehicle was conveying Anthony Joshua alongside two members of his training team, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, who both lost their lives in the crash.

The case has since drawn public attention as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
