Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae has boldly expressed confidence in his team’s ability to defend their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, aiming to become the first team since Egypt in 2008 to achieve back-to-back wins.

Group F Draw and Opening Matches

The 2025 AFCON, set to kick off in Morocco on December 21, sees Ivory Coast placed in Group F alongside Cameroon, Gabon, and Mozambique. The defending champions will begin their campaign against Mozambique on December 24 in Marrakesh, followed by clashes with five-time winners Cameroon and Gabon.

Fae, who took over from Jean-Louis Gasset after a challenging 2024 campaign, led the Elephants to a stunning 2-1 final victory over Nigeria last year. Speaking confidently, he declared, “Sorry Morocco, but we are bringing the trophy back to Abidjan.”

Key Contenders and Coach Statements

  • Egypt: Record seven-time champions Egypt, grouped with South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe in Group B, are poised for a strong showing. Coach Hossam Hassan highlighted stars Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush but emphasized the depth of talent in the squad.
  • Morocco: Hosts Morocco, who last won the AFCON in 1976, are under pressure to deliver on home soil. Coach Walid Regragui, who famously led the Atlas Lions to a third-place finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, remains optimistic. “There will be stress and pressure, but the Moroccan people, the best football supporters in the world, will be our key advantage,” he said.
  • Nigeria: Newly-appointed Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle remained measured in his response, acknowledging the competition’s intensity. Nigeria is set to face Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in Group C.

Morocco’s Preparation and Venue Details

The tournament will utilize nine stadiums across six cities, a record for AFCON. Rabat will host the opening match and final at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah. Other venues include Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakesh, Fes, and Agadir, with significant renovations underway to prepare for the event.

Closing Note

As anticipation builds, teams and fans alike are gearing up for a thrilling competition that promises to showcase Africa’s footballing prowess and deepen its rich sporting legacy.
