United Bank for Africa has dismissed viral social media claims alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, divorced his wife, Awele Elumelu.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Alero Ladipo, Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication at UBA, described the reports as false and malicious.
“The claims are a deliberate falsehood designed to mislead the public and cause reputational harm,” the statement read.
According to Ladipo, the matter has already been reported to law enforcement agencies, with investigations currently ongoing.
“The matter has been referred to the relevant law enforcement authorities, who have commenced action,” the statement added.
UBA disclosed that three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and circulation of the false reports have been arrested. They were identified as Kingsley Akunemeihe (@Directorkem), Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue (@problemchimky).
The bank stated that investigations are expected to lead to more arrests and possible prosecutions.
“Investigations are ongoing and are expected to lead to further arrests and prosecutions of all persons involved in originating, amplifying, or sustaining this defamatory campaign,” the statement said.

UBA also warned individuals and platforms spreading the content to immediately stop circulating the reports and remove the publications from their platforms.
The financial institution further instructed those involved to preserve all related records, including communications and digital footprints, pending legal action.
“Failure to comply will result in the initiation of legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief, damages, and any other remedies available under applicable law,” the statement read.
The bank maintained that it remains committed to protecting the integrity and reputation of its brand and leadership through all available legal means.
The development comes shortly after Dangote Group also denied viral claims suggesting a fallout between its founder, Aliko Dangote, and Tony Elumelu.
