President Bola Tinubu is set to formally swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Wednesday, following his unanimous confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council on Monday.

“The swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day,” the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed in a statement.

The Police Council meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, was presided over by Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional requirements.

Also present were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service, Mrs Esther Walson-Jack.

According to Onanuga, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s professionalism and dedication, especially his performance as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, where he earned accolades for effective crime management.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also commended the appointment, describing it as well-deserved based on Disu’s impressive career record.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike applauded Disu’s track record, recalling his time in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police overseeing the Criminal Investigation Department and the anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015. Wike further highlighted Disu’s later service as Commissioner of Police in the FCT, noting his strong impact in tackling security challenges.

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, formally seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.

Disu’s confirmation comes just days after President Tinubu named him Acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun last Tuesday.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. Now 59, he possesses multiple academic and professional qualifications spanning public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security studies, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship — credentials the Presidency says reflect his commitment to modern, intelligence-driven policing.

Before his latest appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos.

Like his predecessor, Disu previously served under Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor between 1999 and 2007. While Egbetokun was Chief Security Officer, Disu worked as Aide-de-Camp.
