President Bola Tinubu has signed into law two bills establishing the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, and the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, following the signing of the legislations at the State House, Abuja.

The Senate had earlier passed both bills—sponsored by Bamidele in 2023 and 2024—before they gained approval from the House of Representatives and received presidential assent.

In a statement titled “NASS Secures Presidential Assent to Federal Universities in Ekiti, Osun”, Bamidele emphasized the crucial role of the new institutions in advancing science, technology, agriculture, and environmental sustainability in Nigeria.

“These universities will bridge the knowledge gap in science, technology, and innovation, promote environmental sustainability and climate action, and enhance agricultural innovation and food security in Nigeria,” he said.

Specialized Focus Areas

Before the presidential approval, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, had recommended the universities’ establishment in a letter dated February 19, highlighting their distinct academic focus.

The university will specialize in technology-driven education and produce graduates skilled in engineering, digital innovation, and applied sciences. It will also focus on:

  • Environmental sustainability and climate change
  • Renewable energy and waste management
  • Sustainable urban development
  • Research-driven technological solutions for Nigeria’s industrialization

The institution will serve as a hub for agricultural research, innovation, and rural development, addressing Nigeria’s food security challenges. Key areas of focus include:

  • Climate-smart agriculture and improved farming techniques
  • Agro-processing and agribusiness development
  • Socioeconomic transformation in rural areas
  • Collaborative research with international institutions and the private sector

A Milestone for National Growth

With Tinubu’s approval, the Federal Government is taking a major step toward addressing food security, climate change, and technological innovation.

Bamidele commended the president for prioritizing knowledge-driven development, stating:
“This is a landmark decision that will shape Nigeria’s future in agriculture, environmental science, and technological innovation. The benefits will extend beyond Osun and Ekiti to the entire nation.”
