President Bola Tinubu has named Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), as the new chairman of the governing board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, confirmed that Ogundipe takes over from Olufemi Aina, who stepped down less than a year after assuming office.
According to Onanuga, the former UNILAG VC is expected to strengthen the regulatory body overseeing Nigeria’s university system, with emphasis on funding, global standards, and academic stability.
“The appointment is aimed at advancing quality, access, and integrity in the education sector,” he added.
“President Tinubu expects Professor Ogundipe to provide visionary leadership at the National Universities Commission and sustain the credibility of the Nigerian university system in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Ogundipe previously served as Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG from 2017 to 2022.
He holds a PhD in botany from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and an MBA from UNILAG, and specialises in molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany, and ecological conservation.
