Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced plans to end its operations in Nigeria after 12 years in the country.
The company disclosed the decision in a statement on Wednesday, saying its Nigerian operations would officially wind down on September 2, 2026.
“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” Uber said.
The company began operating in Lagos in 2014, providing an alternative transportation option for residents and visitors through its ride-hailing platform.
“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers,” the company said.
Uber expressed gratitude to customers who had used its platform over the years, recalling its role in helping people travel to work, visit family and friends, and move around the city.
“Whether it was a morning commute, a ride to see loved ones, or exploring the city, thank you for trusting the platform to connect you to a driver to get you there safely,” it added.
The company acknowledged that its departure could affect the routines of its customers and apologised for the disruption.
“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.”
Uber said its help centre would remain available until September 23 to assist customers with outstanding account-related enquiries following the shutdown.
“Thank you for welcoming us into your city,” the company added.

Uber’s presence in Nigeria has been marked by a series of challenges, including protests by drivers over fares, commission rates and their treatment by the company.
Drivers staged protests over such concerns in 2017, 2023 and 2025.
The Nigerian exit comes as part of a broader history of Uber withdrawing from markets across Asia and Africa. Since launching internationally in 2009, the company has exited 14 countries across the two regions.
