Three people have been confirmed dead while 12 others were rescued after a two-storey building collapsed in the Ajuwon area of Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The building, which housed shops and residential apartments on Baale Street, came down on Monday afternoon during heavy rainfall, prompting an emergency response from rescue agencies.
Officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other responders were deployed to the scene to search for victims trapped beneath the rubble.
Speaking at the site of the incident, the South-West Zonal Director of NEMA, Akiode Saheed, said occupants of the building had noticed signs of structural failure before the collapse but failed to notify the relevant authorities.
“As you can see, all rescue agencies are conducting search and rescue operations. Currently, we are doing evacuation of the debris.
“As of yesterday, 12 people were recovered alive while three dead bodies were brought out. The dead bodies have been deposited in the hospital.
“There have been some cracks in the building but the occupants did not report to the appropriate authorities,” Saheed said.

He added that emergency teams were continuing to clear the debris in search of anyone who might still be trapped.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) also joined the operation following a request for assistance from the Ogun State Government, as Ajuwon lies along the Lagos-Ogun border.
In a statement, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the agency deployed rescue personnel and heavy-duty equipment to support ongoing search and rescue efforts at the collapse site.
