Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Jamaica, Jane Adams, has formally assumed her diplomatic duties after presenting her letters of credence to Jamaica’s Governor-General, Sir Patrick Allen.

Adams presented the credentials during a ceremony in Jamaica, according to a statement issued by the High Commission of Nigeria in Kingston on Thursday.

During the ceremony, the envoy conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s greetings to the Jamaican government and its people, describing the occasion as an important step in strengthening relations between both countries.

Adams said the presentation represented a fresh chapter in the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Jamaica, which is rooted in shared history, culture and heritage.

“Today marks another milestone in relations between Nigeria and Jamaica, which are bound by a rich tapestry of history, shared heritage and an unbreakable kinship that has transcended the distance between our two nations. We are a people united by blood, culture, and a shared vision of freedom, resilience and greatness.”

The diplomat, who previously served as acting high commissioner to Australia, said her administration in Jamaica would focus on deepening the historic relationship between the two nations.

She said her mission was to usher in “a new dawn” in bilateral relations by building on their cultural connections and developing partnerships that would benefit both countries.

Adams said the proposed areas of cooperation would include trade, investment, healthcare, culture, technology, tourism and education.

According to her, strengthening collaboration across these sectors would help transform the longstanding affinity between Nigerians and Jamaicans into practical and mutually beneficial partnerships.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor-General Allen acknowledged the 56 years of diplomatic relations between Jamaica and Nigeria, but noted that the duration alone did not fully reflect the depth of the ties between the two countries.

Allen also commended Nigeria for its contributions to Jamaica, particularly through the provision of specialist nurses and educators.

He described the contributions as evidence of the strong friendship and cooperation that have existed between the two countries.

The Jamaican governor-general wished Adams a successful tenure as Nigeria’s representative in the country.
