The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has warned that it may embark on industrial action if ongoing renegotiations with the Federal Government are not concluded by the end of April.
The union made its position known in a communiqué issued after a special NEC meeting held on Saturday at its national secretariat in Abuja, where leaders reviewed the status of negotiations involving university-based unions and the Federal Government.
The statement, signed by SSANU National President, Muhammad Ibrahim, and released on Sunday, clarified that discussions are still ongoing and no final agreement has been reached.
“The renegotiation process with the Federal Government is still ongoing and has not been concluded,” the communiqué stated.
SSANU also expressed concern over reports in the public space suggesting that negotiations had been concluded, describing such claims as misleading.
The union warned that failure to conclude talks within the stipulated timeframe would leave it with no option but to down tools.
It stated that SSANU “will have no alternative but to, along with NASU, commence an indefinite, comprehensive, and total industrial action.”

Members were urged to remain calm but alert, while staying united in anticipation of any directives from the union leadership.
“NEC called on all members of the Union across the branches to remain calm, vigilant, united, and prepared to fully comply with the decisions of the Union in defence of their welfare, dignity, and collective interest,” the communiqué added.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to protecting members’ rights, stressing that it would continue to push for justice through firm and collective action.
“The union will continue to pursue justice with firmness, unity, and resolve,” it stated.
This latest warning comes after an earlier NEC meeting held at Ekiti State University, where SSANU issued a final ultimatum over what it described as slow progress in negotiations, salary delays, underfunding of universities, and worsening working conditions.
At that time, the union also cautioned that continued delay could trigger a joint industrial action with other non-teaching university unions.
