Sophia Momodu, the mother of Davido’s first child, has opened up about the stigma and emotional struggles she faced after having a child out of wedlock with the music star.
Momodu shared her experience while speaking at Columbia University ahead of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week.
According to her, becoming pregnant by a globally recognised musician was particularly difficult because she was raised as the daughter of a pastor.
“I am a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. And I was mocked. It was crázy. And I had to find my strength in the midst of all that.”
She explained that despite gaining public recognition, she struggled for years to establish her own voice and identity amid the attention surrounding her relationship with the singer.
“And for the longest time, I didn’t have a voice. I was famous, I was popular, but I didn’t have a voice.”

Momodu said the stigma and constant public scrutiny surrounding her situation often overshadowed her own experiences and made it difficult for her to share her story on her own terms.
She also recalled being advised by an aunt to stay quiet about the situation, saying it was viewed as something Black women were not expected to discuss openly.
