Veteran journalist and former Nigerian ambassador Patrick Cole, father of Tonye Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State in the 2023 election, has died at the age of 86.
President Bola Tinubu announced Cole’s death in a statement he personally signed on Saturday, paying tribute to his contributions to journalism, diplomacy and public service.
Cole served as managing director of the Daily Times between 1976 and 1980 before being appointed Nigeria’s ambassador to Brazil, a position he held from 1987 to 1990.
He also reportedly served in Argentina and represented Nigeria at the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on several occasions.
Reports citing family sources said the former diplomat died in London on Saturday.
Tinubu said he received the news with “profound sadness”, describing Cole as “a distinguished diplomat, journalist, politician, and public servant”.
“Ambassador Cole devoted his life to national service, bringing distinction to his work in diplomacy, journalism and politics,” the president said.
He added that Cole’s professional life demonstrated the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and mutual respect in building relationships and promoting national development.
“His career reflected the enduring value of dialogue, tact, mutual respect and the pursuit of shared interests in advancing national development and international cooperation,” Tinubu said.
The president also highlighted Cole’s influence on the Nigerian media industry, particularly during his time at the Daily Times.
“As Managing Director of the Daily Times, he upheld the vital role of the press in holding public officials accountable, speaking truth to power, and strengthening democratic governance,” he said.
