Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo State, narrowly avoided being killed when thugs struck his car.
It was said that the governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, had given Okorocha and his team cars and security guards so they could go to Imo State for the funeral of Emeka Ihedioha’s mother. Ihedioha had been governor of the state before Okorocha.
This happened after Okorocha had spent two days in Enugu State for the funeral of Ken Nnamani’s wife, who had been the former Senate President.
During the attack, the thieves killed one of the orderlies and took the Chief Security Officer (CSO) and a driver from the van hostage.
Kemi Ashefon also heard that the event happened around 7 p.m. in the Ihube neighborhood along the Okigwe/Enugu Expressway.
Okorocha confirmed that an attempt was made on his life yesterday at Amaimo in Ikeduru Local Council of the state, during the birthday anniversary celebration of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Imo State November 11 governorship election. He said that the convoy had dropped him off and was headed to Enugu when the attack happened.
Okorocha said, “The police officer who was killed was one of the officers sent by the Enugu State Government House to take me to Emeka Ihedioha’s mother’s funeral on Friday.
He said that the attack was bad and that he was angry because he thought he was safe in Enugu, but then he was attacked and a security guard who was with him was killed in his own state.
He said, “I’m really mad. I’m angry because I was in Enugu for two days and nothing bad happened to me, but in my own state, the convoy that the governor of Enugu State (a very good man) gave me to go to the funeral of Ihedioha’s mother in Mbaise was attacked, and one cop was killed. I’m angry about what’s going on in Imo State.”
One of the former governor of Imo State’s staff members confirmed that shots had broken up the cars in the convoy.
He also said that the two other security guards who had been taken were set free the same day after the attackers were questioned.
