Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has granted clemency to Segun Olowookere and Sunday Morakinyo, two convicts sentenced to death for stealing a fowl in 2010.
The announcement, made via Governor Ademola Adeleke’s official X handle on Thursday, revealed that 51 other inmates also benefited from the governor’s exercise of the prerogative of mercy.
This decision follows recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
Governor Ademola Adeleke stated, “In line with the recommendations… and in exercise of the power conferred on me… I extend my grace and mercy unto 53 convicts serving various convictions within the Nigerian Correctional Service.”
The duo, along with four others on death row, received outright pardons, while another convict’s sentence was commuted to 15 years imprisonment.
Olowookere and Morakinyo were sentenced to death in 2014 by Justice Falola of the Osun State High Court for burglary and theft at the home of a police officer.
The governor’s compassionate gesture underscores his administration’s commitment to justice reform and rehabilitation.
