Funso Doherty, a former Lagos State governorship candidate, has announced his intention to run for governor again in 2027 under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The declaration was made on Friday during a party meeting and later shared by ADC Vanguard, the party’s coalition mobilisation arm, via X.

“With all humility, I would like to announce my candidacy to be the next governor of Lagos state,” Doherty said in a video clip circulated online.

ADC Vanguard expressed confidence in his candidacy, describing him as a strong contender for the state’s top seat.

“Indeed the ADC (the main opposition party) has a strong and sellable candidate in Lagos State,” the group stated.

Doherty’s latest move comes shortly after his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party he joined in 2024.

In a resignation letter shared on March 29, he attributed his decision to internal crises within the PDP, particularly a court ruling that nullified the party’s 2025 convention and worsened its factional divisions.

He argued that the judgment effectively placed control of the party in the hands of a faction aligned with interests supporting the re-election of the ruling party, a situation he said he could not be part of.

“I will not be a party to sustaining this tragic travesty. The people of Lagos State, many of whom have waited far too long for meaningful improvement in their day-to-day lives from the actions of their government, deserve much better than that,” he said.

Doherty previously contested the 2023 Lagos governorship election under the ADC before later defecting to the PDP.
