Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has arrived at the Federal High Court in Abuja for his arraignment over social media comments referring to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, as an “illegal IG.”

The activist (Omoyele Sowore) is facing a three-count charge under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.
The case, filed under suit number FCH/ABJ/23/25, accuses Sowore of deliberately using his verified Twitter account to spread what the police describe as false publications intended to cause unrest and undermine police authority.
Police Justification and Legal Reactions
According to the police, Omoyele Sowore’s statement was aimed at inciting disorder and disrupting public peace. His legal team, led by Marshall Abubakar, confirmed that the charges would be contested in court.
Political activist Deji Adeyanju condemned the case, calling it an abuse of legal process and vowing a strong legal defense.

Background to the Case
Sowore was arrested on Monday after rejecting police bail conditions related to separate allegations of obstructing public officers and cyberstalking. The case also follows his viral video in December, where he alleged police extortion at a Lagos checkpoint, further straining his relationship with Nigerian authorities.
Proceedings at the Federal High Court are expected to shape the legal battle ahead.
