The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention) has stated that there is no indication of widespread COVID-19 transmission in Cross River State, following reports of a newly confirmed case in the state.

The Cross River State government had earlier announced a fresh COVID-19 case, with the state Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, disclosing that the index patient is a 53-year-old Chinese national working with Lafarge in Akamkpa Local Government Area. According to him, the individual arrived in Nigeria on March 17 and later began showing symptoms.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Director-General of the NCDC, Jide Idris, confirmed awareness of the reported case, stressing that the situation is under control and being closely monitored.

He explained that the patient has been isolated and is currently receiving medical attention.

“This is the only confirmed case that has been isolated and is currently being managed in line with national treatment guidelines. The patient is in stable condition and responding to care,” the statement reads.

Idris added that response efforts were immediately activated in collaboration with state authorities and partner agencies after confirmation of the case.

“Following confirmation of the case, the Cross River State Ministry of Health, in coordination with NCDC and with support from partners, has activated response measures, including contact tracing, surveillance, and infection prevention & control,” the NCDC boss added.

He further assured that there is no sign of community spread at this stage.

“All identified contacts are being followed up appropriately, and there is no evidence at this time of widespread transmission.”

The NCDC boss noted that the development reflects the strength of Nigeria’s disease surveillance system and urged the public to remain calm while observing basic hygiene and preventive measures.

Idris also said the agency will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
