Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary to Be Low-Key, Announces FG

The Federal Government (FG) has disclosed its plans for Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary on October 1, 2023, opting for a low-key celebration.

During a press conference in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume stated that no world leaders would be invited, aligning with the decision for a subdued event due to economic challenges.

Akume emphasized that the low-key celebration is not reflective of Nigeria’s performance but is a response to current economic hardships.

The theme for the anniversary is “Nigeria @ 63: Renewed Hope for Unity & Prosperity.”

He underscored the importance of national unity and prosperity, highlighting the government’s commitment to safeguarding national interests.

Akume commended Nigeria’s democratic progress since 1999 and emphasized the symbiotic relationship between the government and its citizens in a democratic system.

Acknowledging the economic challenges caused by the removal of the fuel subsidy and global economic downturn, the FG pledged to provide palliatives and improve transportation services.

Additionally, the government is engaging with labor unions to address concerns and enhance the welfare of Nigerian workers.

Akume outlined the Renewed Hope Agenda, a comprehensive plan led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which aims to address food security, poverty alleviation, security, economic growth, job creation, access to capital, rule of law, and anti-corruption efforts.

The upcoming anniversary event will feature activities such as an anniversary symposium and public lecture, a lecture at the National Mosque Conference Center, Juma’at Prayer at the National Mosque, a presidential broadcast, an inter-denominational church service at the National Christian Center, and a military parade at the Presidential Villa.
