Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has played down the tensions surrounding his team’s heated rivalry with Manchester City, insisting it is a natural outcome of both clubs’ relentless pursuit of excellence.
The two Premier League powerhouses are set to clash at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, reigniting a rivalry that has intensified over recent seasons. Arsenal finished as runners-up to City in the 2022-23 campaign and once again fell short on the final day last season as Pep Guardiola’s side clinched the title.
Their last meeting in September saw tempers boil over, with City’s Erling Haaland confronting Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes and exchanging heated words with Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta.
Addressing the tension, Odegaard dismissed any lingering animosity, describing such moments as natural in high-stakes encounters.
“In football, emotions run high, and the adrenaline is pumping,” the Norwegian midfielder told British media. “That’s part of the game. Once the match is over, you move on.”
Odegaard acknowledged the fierce competition between the sides but emphasized that many players share connections beyond club football.
“A lot of us know each other from national teams—England, Brazil, and me with Erling. On the pitch, it’s a tough battle, but off it, things are different,” he added.
Heading into the crucial fixture, Arsenal sit second in the Premier League table with 47 points, trailing leaders Liverpool by six. Meanwhile, City, currently fourth with 41 points, will be eager to close the gap in the title race.
