The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, has declared Obafemi Hamzat as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement followed earlier endorsement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during a meeting with party leaders at the Governor’s Office in Alausa, where he described his deputy as the “best man for the job” and prayed for his success.
At the end of the meeting, Sanwo-Olu embraced Hamzat and raised his hand in a symbolic gesture that drew applause from party stakeholders present.
Speaking on Tuesday at Lagos House, Marina, GAC Chairman Tajudeen Olusi confirmed the council’s unanimous decision to back Hamzat.
“We have adopted, and we have all agreed, that Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the current deputy governor of our state, is the consensus candidate of our party. And we have all pledged to stand by him. That is the information,” he said.
In another show of support, Olusi and Sanwo-Olu jointly raised Hamzat’s hand before other party leaders at the briefing.
Reacting to the development, Governor Sanwo-Olu said party elders had also agreed to fund Hamzat’s nomination form.

“Additional information is that all of my leaders and fathers here have tasked themselves that they are going to fund the nomination form for the deputy governor, who is our consensus candidate,” he said.
“They have all levied themselves, even from their savings as retirees, saying they are the ones who will buy him the form for his nomination.”
The endorsement comes amid ongoing political discussions within the APC over the 2027 Lagos governorship race, with Hamzat increasingly seen as a frontrunner.
However, former governorship candidate Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has maintained that no official final decision has been made by the party leadership.
In a statement through his spokesperson Gbenga Ogunleye, he said he would support the party’s eventual choice if a consensus candidate is formally adopted.
