The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed thorough investigations into the tragic stampedes at food distribution events in Abuja and Anambra State, which left at least 13 dead and many others injured.

Stampede Details

  • In Abuja, the incident occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where food items were distributed to vulnerable groups, resulting in 10 deaths and several injuries.
  • In Okija, Anambra State, a similar event claimed the lives of 3 individuals, with many others wounded.

Police Action and Warnings

The IGP labeled negligence in organizing such events as criminal, invoking legal provisions under Sections 196 of the Penal Code and 344 of the Criminal Code.

  • He tasked state police commissioners to investigate the incidents for possible legal actions.
  • IGP Egbetokun urged organizers to collaborate with security agencies to ensure proper crowd control and prevent future tragedies.

Reactions

  1. President Bola Tinubu canceled all Lagos engagements, including the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta, in mourning.
    • Tinubu expressed grief, stating, “In a season of joy, we grieve with citizens mourning the painful losses.”
  2. Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, attributed the tragedies to systemic failures and the desperation caused by harsh economic conditions.
    • Obi called for sustainable solutions to address hunger and better governance to prevent such disasters.

Call for Reform

Authorities emphasized the need for a structured framework in distributing palliatives, involving security measures to ensure the safety of vulnerable groups and the general public.

Investigations are ongoing to determine accountability and prevent future occurrences.
