The ongoing separation saga involving Nollywood actors Frederick Leonard and Peggy Ovire has taken another twist after the actor’s lawyer, Barrister Rita Amy, publicly addressed issues surrounding the breakdown of their marriage.
In a video circulating online, the legal practitioner alleged that Ovire has been frustrating efforts to formally end the marriage. According to her, the actress’ family has allegedly refused to return the bride price, a traditional step often required to complete a customary divorce.
Barrister Amy also dismissed allegations linking Leonard romantically to actress Nkiru Umeh, insisting there is no affair between the two entertainers.
She maintained that Leonard and Umeh have shared nothing more than a professional and friendly relationship since 2012, describing claims of infidelity as unfounded.
Addressing Ovire directly, the lawyer questioned her handling of the divorce process and court proceedings.
“Peggy, when Frederick’s lawyer came to court, where was your lawyer? Nowhere to be found. You appeared in court without a lawyer. Why, though, if I may ask? You do not want the divorce. See, tell yourself the truth…”
She further claimed that Leonard had taken steps to end the marriage through customary channels.
“Frederick asked your father to return the bride price. It is very customary. It is very legal. But you said no, come to the court to collect the bride price. There is no court of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria that would force a man to stay married where he does not want to marry.”
