Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has paid tribute to the late Lucia Onabanjo, describing her as a woman whose life exemplified quiet service, strong moral principles, and steadfast family support that bolstered public leadership in the state.
The governor spoke at the Funeral Mass held on Friday at St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, pledging the state government’s backing for the completion of the cathedral project in her memory.
Abiodun highlighted Mama Onabanjo’s simple and disciplined lifestyle, noting that she deliberately shunned public attention while earning widespread respect for her humility, faith, and ethical values.
He emphasized that her influence was not derived from holding political office but from the strength of character she nurtured within her family and community.

“In honour of Mama Lucia Onabanjo, the Iya-Ijo of this church, we will support the completion of this cathedral so it can stand as one of her enduring legacies,” Abiodun said, assuring church authorities of timely delivery of the project.
The governor further described her as a devoted wife and mother who instilled discipline, faith, and responsibility in her household, remaining steadfast alongside her husband, Olabisi Onabanjo, even during challenging political periods, including his detention following the 1983 military coup.
Earlier in the service, Reverend Father Mary Odunsi described Mama Onabanjo as a “silent achiever” whose quiet but vital contributions to her husband’s administration, the church, and society would continue to inspire future generations.
The Funeral Mass drew numerous dignitaries, including former governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and political figures from across Ogun State and beyond.
Madam Lucia Onabanjo passed away at the age of 100 on Monday, January 11, 2026. Her husband, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, served as Ogun State’s first civilian governor from 1979 to 1983.
