The Federal Government has announced plans to begin monthly payments of ₦50,000 to selected vulnerable households under its National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI).
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, explaining that the initiative was designed to cushion the impact of rising living costs on low-income Nigerians.
Doro said eligible beneficiaries would receive text messages from designated telecommunications providers seeking their consent before the funds are transferred directly to their bank accounts or mobile wallets.
“This message is genuine. Once consent is given, payment is made directly to the beneficiary’s account/mobile wallet,” the minister said.
He explained that NERSI was introduced to complement existing government social protection and economic assistance schemes, providing immediate financial support while helping households build resilience and achieve greater economic stability.
According to him, the intervention aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“We recognise the challenges many Nigerians are facing. The ministry is committed to delivering this intervention with dignity, transparency and accountability,” Doro said.
The minister warned potential beneficiaries to remain alert to fraudulent messages and individuals seeking to exploit the programme. He stressed that recipients would not need to submit applications, pay fees or register through agents to access the support.
“Never share your PIN or BVN with anyone,” he cautioned.
Doro advised anyone uncertain about a message or asked to make payments to access the intervention to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
He added that the programme would undergo periodic reviews to accommodate changes in the cost of living, with beneficiaries to be informed directly before any adjustments to the payments.
Information on the NERSI portal indicates that beneficiaries are selected through verified national identity records and the National Social Register, with the intervention focused on poor and vulnerable households.

The portal also identifies ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo Payment Service Bank and NairaGram as approved payment service providers.
It explained that payments would be rolled out in phases, meaning eligible households might receive their notifications at different times.
Under the programme’s guidelines, beneficiaries can use their mobile wallets to access the funds, transfer the money to their bank accounts or withdraw through agents, subject to applicable transaction charges.
