The Federal Ministry of Works has postponed indefinitely the planned rehabilitation of a section of the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The maintenance work, which was due to begin on July 28, 2026, was expected to run for two weeks before the project was put on hold.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the Acting Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Engr. R. Adeleye, said the decision followed directives from higher authorities, adding that a new date would be announced later.
“I am very sorry to announce at this eleventh hour that we have put on hold the proposed Kara Bridge expansion joints repair scheduled to commence this morning, July 28, 2026, on directives from above due to some very crucial reasons.
“A rescheduled date shall be announced in due course,” Adeleye said.
Before the suspension, the Lagos State Government had alerted motorists to prepare for temporary traffic diversions during the rehabilitation.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, had explained that the project was designed to improve the bridge’s safety and durability.
He said the existing four-lane carriageway would be reduced to two lanes across a 1.5-kilometre section to create a safe working area for engineers.
Osiyemi had also warned motorists to expect partial traffic disruptions around the Kara axis, urging them to obey traffic rules and cooperate with officials managing vehicular movement.

He noted that moderate congestion was expected around the Fatgbems Turn area, where some drivers might make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid delays, while traffic heading towards Ibadan beyond the junction was expected to move with minimal interruption.
The commissioner further advised road users to plan their trips ahead, explore alternative routes where possible and comply with traffic directives throughout the repair period.
The Federal Ministry of Works has not indicated when the rehabilitation will now begin.
