A founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who has carried the party’s membership card for over 20 years, has resigned from the political group. For former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, he is set to move on from a platform he helped build for over two decades. He gives reasons for his action in a letter to the party chairman in Adamawa State just after his visit to the family of late former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP’s Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and a deep sense of disillusionment with the party’s direction as the reasons behind his decision.
“It is with a heavy heart that I write to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” he wrote. “As one of the founding fathers of this great party, this decision is not an easy one. But the values we once held dear have been eroded beyond recognition.”
Atiku, who served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under the PDP and contested the presidency twice under its banner in 2019 and 2023, reflected on his journey with a mix of gratitude and disappointment.
“Serving this nation as Vice President for two terms, and later as a presidential candidate, has been among the most defining chapters of my public life,” he wrote.

“But I cannot continue to stay with a party that has strayed so far from the principles we once fought for.”
Though the letter did not hint at his next political move, it has already stirred speculation about his plans for 2027.
“I wish the party and its leadership all the best in the years ahead. Thank you for the opportunities and the support over the years,” Atiku concluded.
The letter was acknowledged by the ward chairman, Hammadama Abubakar, on the same day.
