Popular Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has shared why she now advises fellow actors to stay away from political debates, revealing that her open support for President Bola Tinubu during the last election had a negative impact on her career.

The actress made the disclosure during a conversation with Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson while offering him advice on strategies for achieving success at the box office.

During the discussion, Abraham cautioned entertainers against publicly endorsing political candidates, stressing that neutrality could help them avoid unnecessary backlash.

“The first advice I will give you in my entire life is don’t put your mouth in politics. Don’t tell them you’re supporting anybody. Don’t support anybody, just be on your own. Be neutral,” she said.

When Timini pointed out that she had openly campaigned for Tinubu during the last election, the actress responded, “That was then.”

Reflecting on the experience, Abraham admitted that her political stance eventually affected her work.

“Haaaaaaa, it affected me oooo,” she exclaimed.

Her comments come amid the controversy that surrounded the release of her film Ijakumo (Born-Again Stripper) in early 2024. At the time, the actress lamented that the movie was being illegally distributed on WhatsApp and expressed frustration over the criticism she faced due to her political views.

“You all will tell the world why choosing my own candidate is a crime and yours is not,” she said while reacting to the backlash.

The situation followed calls by some social media users who urged others to boycott the film after Abraham publicly supported Tinubu during the election period.
