Nigerian gospel singer Esther Igbekele is mourning the death of her mother, Mary Amope Igbekele (JP).
Esther announced the bereavement in an emotional Instagram post on Friday, expressing her pain following her mother’s passing.
The singer wrote, “AND MY MOTHER DIED. Death, you took my GOLD away.”
The death comes shortly after the family celebrated Mary’s 70th birthday and wedding anniversary, making the loss particularly difficult for her loved ones.
Following the announcement, fans, colleagues and well-wishers have taken to social media to sympathise with Esther and her family.
Esther, popularly referred to as the Duchess of Gospel Music, began her music career in 1996 and has since established herself in the Nigerian gospel music scene.

Over the years, she has released several gospel songs and projects and performed at Christian events both in Nigeria and internationally, including engagements in the United States and the United Kingdom.
The singer has not disclosed the cause of her mother’s death, while details of the burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
