Grace Ogunleye, the vice-chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area in Ekiti State, has been rescued after she was abducted by suspected gunmen along the Ipere–Iludun road.
Sources said the incident happened on Wednesday while the council official was returning from an official assignment.
Her vehicle was reportedly found abandoned by the roadside shortly after the attack, while attempts to reach her through her mobile phone were unsuccessful as the line had been switched off.
It was gathered that Ogunleye had earlier visited the Ilejemeje local government secretariat before heading towards Ido Ekiti when the assailants allegedly intercepted her vehicle and took her away.
Confirming the incident earlier, Falade Sunday, director of information and civic orientation for Ilejemeje LGA, said security agencies had been informed and efforts were ongoing to secure her freedom.
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force in Ekiti, Sunday Abutu, also confirmed the abduction.
However, in a later security update, the police announced that the vice-chairman had been rescued unharmed following a joint rescue operation.
“One Mrs Ogunleye Grace, the Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government, who was allegedly kidnapped on 20th May, 2026 by yet to be identified hoodlums has been rescued unhurt,” the statement read.
