Juventus manager Thiago Motta admitted his side were second-best after their 2-0 home defeat to Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Despite already securing a spot in the knockout phase playoffs, the loss saw Juventus slip to 20th in the standings, meaning they now face a tougher unseeded draw against either AC Milan or PSV Eindhoven.
The defeat followed their Serie A loss to Napoli, marking back-to-back disappointments for the Turin giants. Frustrated home fans jeered as Juventus ended the Champions League group phase on a low note.
Motta Admits Benfica Deserved the Win
Speaking after the game, Motta shouldered the blame and acknowledged his team’s shortcomings: “Today we didn’t deserve the victory. Benfica created and finished better than us. Now we have to improve quickly because on Sunday we have to play immediately.”
“In Naples, we played a good first half. Today, the first half was difficult. In the second half, we did better, but not enough, and they deserved to win.”
No Individual Blame, but Attacking Issues Remain
Motta refused to single out players despite Juventus’ attacking struggles: “After a defeat, I certainly don’t want to point the finger at anyone. I’m the one responsible, but the boys are trying to give their best.”
“Today, we lacked in the last metres. There are things to improve quickly, because there is a game on Sunday. For the rest, little to say, because Benfica deserved the victory.”
What’s Next for Juventus?
Champions League: With Serie A action resuming on Sunday, Motta and his players will need a quick turnaround to bounce back from their recent setbacks.
