The Nigerian Army says troops of the 82 Division have dismantled a suspected camp belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State.
In a statement posted on its official X handle, the Army said the operation was carried out on April 24, 2026, along the Ubaha Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area following credible intelligence.
The military explained that the mission formed part of a broader clearance operation aimed at dislodging the group’s hideout and locating two soldiers killed in 2022—Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew—who were reportedly abducted and murdered while travelling for their traditional wedding.
According to the statement, troops came under heavy fire after advancing towards the suspected camp but responded with superior force.
“Upon receiving credible intelligence, the army reported that its troops advanced towards a suspected IPOB/ESN hideout, where they encountered heavy fire from armed criminals.
“The troops engaged the terrorists decisively, successfully repelling multiple ambushes and forcing the criminals to retreat in chaos,” the statement said.
The Army added that the operation exposed the group’s activities, describing them as violent and criminal in nature.
“The encounter further revealed the desperation and criminal nature of the group, which continues to target innocent citizens and security personnel alike,” it added.

After clearing the camp, troops reportedly conducted a thorough search of the area, during which shallow graves were discovered.
“After successfully clearing the camp, the Nigerian Army said the troops conducted a comprehensive search of the area, leading to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel.
“The graves were carefully excavated, and the suspected remains were recovered,” the statement said.
The Army confirmed that the remains have been secured for forensic examination, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities.
“Efforts are also ongoing to liaise with the families of the fallen personnel to ensure proper identification and facilitate befitting burial arrangements in honour of their sacrifice.”
It added that the operation reflects ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the South-East and restore peace in the region.
“This operation not only underscores the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for fallen heroes but also highlights the continued degradation of IPOB/ESN criminal networks and infrastructure across the South East.
“The discovery of shallow graves within their camp further exposes the group’s heinous atrocities and disregard for human life.”
The Army assured residents that operations would continue until all criminal elements are eliminated, while also urging citizens to support security agencies with credible intelligence.
