The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, has explained that a photograph showing him holding a placard was taken during a prayer walk in 2020, under the administration of late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Adeboye gave the clarification during the church’s thanksgiving service on Sunday, saying the image had been wrongly presented as evidence that he protested against former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He recalled being labelled a wicked man after someone circulated the photograph with claims that he had carried a placard against Jonathan, who left office in 2015.
The cleric said the exercise was not a protest but a prayer walk organised following an initiative by the Christian Association of Nigeria.
“Recently, just one mischievous somebody wrote in the papers, or said somehow, ‘Pastor Adeboye is a very wicked man. After all, we know that not too long ago, he carried a placard against President Goodluck Jonathan,’” he said.
Adeboye said the photograph, which showed him dressed in white and green while holding a placard, was subsequently circulated, leading many people to accept the claim without questioning its accuracy.
He explained that although he did carry a placard, the activity was part of a prayer walk organised to seek divine intervention over the country’s challenges.
“And everybody said yes. They brought out the picture of where I was dressed in white and green carrying a placard and everybody said see him. When I heard about it, I said, ‘me, I carried a placard against Jonathan?’”

“True, I carried a placard. I can’t deny that. It was not a protest, it was a prayer walk. We wanted to pray.
“The CAN chairman said all churches should do a prayer walk near their churches. That’s what I did in Ebute Metta.
“But I carried the placard in 2020. Jonathan ceased to be president in 2015. I carried the placard five years in the second term of Buhari.”
The RCCG leader also spoke about his university experience, recalling that he studied journalism-related subjects and was taught the importance of confirming information before publishing it.
He faulted the journalist who allegedly changed the date of the prayer walk from 2020 to 2015, saying the claim was accepted by many people without proper verification.
“A journalist twisted it. I said, I did what I did in 2015. And everybody swallowed it,” the cleric said.
In February 2020, Adeboye led RCCG members on a demonstration against insecurity in Nigeria. Buhari was president at the time.
