The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Olumode Adeyemi, has come under public scrutiny after returning to his home state, Kogi, in a convoy during the Easter period, a move that has triggered mixed reactions online.

According to a post shared by the FFS on X, Adeyemi’s visit included royal engagements and stakeholder meetings, with the service noting that he “receives royal blessings, as stakeholders commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and call for stronger fire safety. Fire station in Kabba underway.”

A statement from the service explained that Adeyemi, who was appointed as Controller-General on August 14, 2025, paid courtesy visits to traditional rulers across the state and held a grand reception in Kabba.

During the visit, he met with prominent monarchs including the Elulu of Mopa, Muyiwa Ibeun; the Maigari of Lokoja, Ibrahim Gambo Kabir Maikarfi IV; and other traditional leaders in his hometown of Odo-Ape, where he was welcomed with cultural displays and prayers for his tenure.

The delegation also visited the Obaro of Kabba before attending a reception at the Olonijola Event Centre, where key figures such as Kogi Deputy Governor Joel Salifu Oyibo, APC National Deputy Secretary Durosinmi Meseko, and former FFS boss Ibrahim Alhaji Liman were present.

Stakeholders at the event praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Adeyemi, while also calling for improved fire safety infrastructure in the state.

“The Maigari of Lokoja called for the establishment of a National Fire Training School in Kogi State, while the Obaro of Kabba appealed for the siting of a Fire Station in Kabba, the headquarters of Kogi West,” the statement noted.

In response, Adeyemi said the service is already making plans to establish a fire station in Kabba, adding that “we are already working towards establishing a Fire Station in Kabba to address the recurring fire incidents in the area”, while appealing for “continued prayers, support, and collaboration”.

However, the convoy movement, captured in a viral video showing Adeyemi being escorted with outriders, has sparked backlash on social media, with many Nigerians criticising the display amid existing challenges in emergency response systems.

A user on X, @laplace_bopm, wrote: “No wonder, there is no water in ur station, u all use ur lean resources to fund the lifestyle of ur bosses. Imagine, ordinary fire service in convoy with attack vehicles that is needed against Islamic terrorists.”

Another user, @TheOmegaM, described the development as a misuse of public funds.

“A country that lacks basic amenities and has the head of the Fire Service moving around like an emperor shows a complete lack of focus,” the user wrote.

Similarly, @Bashir GS and @Napp06 also criticised the show of force, calling it misplaced priority and questioning the relevance of such a display in a system still struggling with inadequate fire service coverage across the country.
