The Federal Government has started evacuating Nigerians who wish to leave Iran, facilitating their movement across the border into Armenia as tensions escalate in the Middle East.

The development was confirmed on Tuesday by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in a post on her X account.

According to Dabiri-Erewa, officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are coordinating the evacuation process and accompanying citizens who have indicated interest in leaving the country.

“The willing Nigerians in Iran are being safely escorted across the Armenia border by officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, ensuring smooth and secure passage for those wishing to leave,” she wrote.

She also assured that no Nigerian living in Iran has been harmed amid the ongoing regional tensions. Dabiri-Erewa added that embassy personnel are stationed at the border to receive and support evacuees as they arrive.

The evacuation effort, carried out in collaboration with Armenian authorities, forms part of the Federal Government’s emergency response to safeguard Nigerians abroad during periods of instability.

Officials say the move reflects Nigeria’s continued monitoring of developments in the Middle East and its commitment to protecting the welfare of its citizens overseas.
