Human rights activist and African Action Congress, AAC, presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, saying he has nothing new to offer Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sowore made the remark in a post on his verified X account on Sunday while reacting to Atiku’s political record and his recent comments on fuel subsidy.

Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, had recently said he would restore fuel subsidy if elected president, arguing that its removal by President Bola Tinubu’s administration had not benefited the country.

Reacting, Sowore questioned what Atiku would bring to the country after decades in Nigeria’s political establishment.

He said, “Atiku served as vice president for eight years during an era when enormous sums were poured into the power sector, yet millions of Nigerians remained trapped in darkness.

“After decades at the centre of Nigeria’s political system, what fundamentally different future is Atiku offering Nigerians today? Nothing!

“Nigeria does not need another recycling of the same political elite. We need a clean break from the system that produced poverty, corruption, insecurity and darkness.”

Sowore also noted that Atiku had been involved in Nigeria’s political system since the 1980s, arguing that the country needed a departure from the established political order rather than a return to familiar political figures.

The AAC candidate is expected to contest alongside other presidential hopefuls as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
