Kayode Egbetokun has resigned from his position as Inspector General of Police (IGP) following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
Sources within the Presidency confirmed on Tuesday that the president has approved the appointment of Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Annex in Lagos, as Egbetokun’s successor.
According to the source, Egbetokun was formally asked to step down during a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
Egbetokun was initially appointed as the 22nd indigenous Inspector General of Police on 19 June 2023, with his appointment later confirmed by the Police Council on 31 October 2023.
At the time of his appointment, he was 58 years old and was originally expected to retire on 4 September 2024 upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60.

However, the National Assembly later amended the Police Act, enabling him to complete a full four-year tenure as Inspector General unless removed by the president. This amendment would have allowed him to remain in office until 31 October 2027.
His resignation now brings an early end to his tenure, paving the way for a leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force.
